Music 839: Harmony & Voice-Leading

Course Description


Course Description:

A review of the modern research literatures related to the perception and cognition of Western harmony and voice-leading.

The goal of this course is to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the experimental and theoretical literatures pertaining to the perceptual and cognitive foundations of Western harmony and voice-leading.

With regard to harmony, the course will consider the psychoacoustic theories of Ernst Terhardt and Richard Parncutt, and the neural network models developed by Jamshed Bharucha and others. With regard to voice-leading, the course will consider the work of Albert Bregman, Leo van Noorden, and David Huron.

The course will emphasize the linkage between practical research procedures and philosophical sophistication in interpreting the process and results of research.


Approach:

The course objectives are pursued through weekly readings, seminar discussions, student presentations, brief quizzes (related to the assigned readings), and a final essay or project.


Pre-Requisites:

The course has no formal pre-requisites. Graduate standing is required.


Meeting Times:

This course is scheduled for the Winter Quarter of 2007. Classes are held on the Ohio State University Campus in Columbus, Ohio. Class times are not yet scheduled.

Workload:

The workload for Music 839 entails three hours of seminar participation each week, plus approximately ten hours of reading (roughly 60 pages) per week, as well as one hour of lab/assignment activities per week.
