All experiments involving human subjects must receive prior approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) before the experiment can begin. The IRB adjudicates and monitors potential risk (both physical and psychological) to human participants (and animals) in experimental research.
Assemble and submit an Experimental Protocol Application to the OSU Institutional Review Board (IRB). Describe an experiment involving human subjects that you might consider doing. Education-related experiments do not require IRB approval, so for the purposes of this assignment, please choose an experiment that isn't obviously education-related. Put together a Protocol Application to the OSU Behavioral and Social Science Institutional Review Board (BSS-IRB). Follow the procedure and forms provided by the BSS-IRB. Go to the OSU Research Foundation web site (http://www1.rf.ohio-state.edu/), click on "Research Risk Protection," and then "Human Subjects." The bottom of the page provides appropriate information under "Human Subjects Submission Forms".
Consult our own OSU Music Research Program web site (http://dactyl.som.ohio-state.edu/Research/human.subjects.application.html) for useful advice and detailed instructions for completing your forms.
Note that the "Principal Investigator" for an OSU experiment must be a professor. Identify Prof. Huron as the Principal Investigator and identify yourself as the "Co-Investigator".
The IRB deadline is Noon on Friday April 21st; do not miss this firm deadline.
Have Dr. Huron review the "Research Proposal" part of your experiment a week before you submit the forms. The Research Proposal can be as short as half a page and should not be longer than three pages.
The purpose of this activity is to give you experience in designing an experiment, and ensuring that the experiment meets government regulations for research ethnics as administered by the OSU Office of Research Risks Protection.
GRADING: You will automatically receive full marks ("A") for this assignment if your application is approved without conditions. You will automatically receive an "A-" if you satisfy the IRB conditions by the end of the quarter.
DUE DATE: Friday April 21st / End of term.
